Almost 50 years of Hotel Barbarahof – A chronicle of the anniversary
The Hotel Barbarahof would not be what it is today without Barbara and Rudolf Steger. It is thanks to our grandparents that every year guests from all over the world visit us to experience an unforgettable holiday in the Austrian Alps. How the story began and what hard work and tireless diligence are in today’s 4-star hotel, shows a look at the hotel history.
1945 till 1951
Rudi as woodsman
Rudi works as a lumberjack in Styria, while Barbara earns her living as a waitress in Obertauern.
1951
First guest room rental
With their first joint savings, the two build their first house with guest room rental in St. Johann im Pongau.
1952
Wedding
Barbara and Rudi get married.
1959
Schifterwirt Inn
The Steger couple builds the Schifterwirt inn in Taxenbach, and they have been entertaining guests here for a total of 13 years.
1966
First agriculture
Barbara and Rudi buy their first farm, the Rainergut in Högmoos.
1970
Building plot
The building plot for the Hotel Barbarahof is purchased.
1971 / 1972
Construction & Opening
The construction of the hotel will take about two years. The opening is celebrated Christmas 1972.
1978
Wedding
Elfriede and Rudi Steger junior, today’s senior partners, marry.
1980
First extension
First addition: the restaurant is extended by the terrace and the hotel is raised.
1981
Birth
On February 28, daughter Barbara is born.
1984
Birth
On June 28, son Roland, the current hotel manager, is born.
1985
Handover of the hotel
The grandparents hand over the Hotel Barbarahof to Rudi junior.
1992
Birth
On December 8, daughter Isabella is born.
2000
Cottage country life
Rudi junior and Elfriede buy the neighboring house “Trybulec”, today’s “Ferienhaus Landleben”.
2001
Sauna area
The sauna area is expanded and the garden of life is designed.
2003
Renovation
All bathrooms in Hotel Barbarahof are renovated.
2005
Renewal
The entrance area and the reception will be renewed.
2007
Renovation
The sauna area is being renovated.
2008
Conversion
The hotel kitchen is being remodeled and expanded. In addition, geothermal heating will be installed. The old oil heating system is removed.
2011
All-round renovation | 3-star superior hotel
An all-around renovation is underway: All 40 hotel rooms will be renewed, a new elevator will be installed, the exterior facade will be renovated and four new deluxe rooms will be created – all in just eight weeks. In the same year, the major renovation is rewarded with the reclassification as a 3-star superior hotel.

Extension
The restaurant is expanded and the Herzerlstube is established.
2013
The 40th anniversary is celebrated.
In another major reconstruction, the entrance area will be renewed and the large reception area will be built in its current form. The winter garden is enlarged and the mountain fire lounge and the Swiss pine relaxation room with a cozy tea corner are created.

Wedding Roland & Katrin
On August 15, Roland and Katrin celebrated their wedding in Gamlitz, Styria. An unforgettably beautiful experience!
2015
Birth
On December 23, son Felix is born.

Country house Felix
In August Roland and Katrin buy the “Landhaus Felix”.in the apartments have a total of 25 people place.

4 generations
We are filled with gratitude that our dear great-grandpa Rudi Sr. was allowed to experience a few more months of our son Felix growing up. The picture shows Rudi, Roland, Felix, Rudi sen.

Hotel handover to Roland
Rudi Steger hands over the Hotel Barbarahof to his son Roland in June 2016 and thus goes into his well-deserved retirement. Of course, Rudi will continue to work in the company for the time being for smaller jobs and especially for the guest animation.
In addition, the hotel will be connected to the fiber optic network in the spring and will receive a high-speed WLAN system. The parking lot will be enlarged. In addition, a small garden with a sun terrace will be built.
2017
House Seilergasse in family ownership
Re-purchase of the apartments in the house Seilergasse (Zell am See), which great-grandpa Rudi had built in the 70s together with son Rudi.

Conversion of the garden
A new garden is being built with barbecue area, sun terrace, bike wash center, children’s playground, petting zoo, fitness course, bobby car track, mini pump track and much more….

Conversion gourmet workshop
The buffet was completely renewed and enlarged, we also extended the restaurant with the hayloft and a new children’s playroom was built.

Country house Fabian
In the first Corona-Lockdown Roland and Katrin buy the “Holiday Lodge Fabian”, formerly “Albany”. The beautifully renovated apartment house can accommodate a total of 16 people.

4 stars classification
After 10 years of successful classification of ***Superior we have decided to take the next step and have the Barbarahof classified as ****Hotel. We are grateful and proud of our employees that we were able to take this step together.

Birth
On June 14, son Fabian is born.
2023
Boutique House happYellow
We bought the former Hotel Sport Aktiv from our dear neighbors Anita and Lorenz. On May 26, 2023, we launched the new Boutique House happYellow as a Bed & Breakfast. In autumn 2023, we also renovated and modernized the hotel. You can find more info about the new hotel here.
